The Milwaukee Soldiers Home is a National Historic Landmark and one of only three Soldiers homes that have survived in the United States. It was originally established in 1867 as a place for Civil War soldiers to recuperate and transition back into society. It is the most intact Soldiers Home remaining in the country, and the only one with most of its surrounding village still intact. Take a self-guided walking tour with the free “Milwaukee Soldiers Home” app or book a free 90-minute guided walking tour of the Soldiers Home District, operated by the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance. Tours cover approximately one mile and include information on the history, architecture and preservation of these historic buildings. Tours run rain or shine.
