Slow down, relax and “Coast for a While” in Manitowoc, where recreational opportunities abound. Linger on groomed white beaches, or take a leisurely walk or bike ride along the six mile paved Mariners Trail, the longest, continuous scenic view of Lake Michigan in the state of Wisconsin. Explore a variety of parks and forest areas, or fish one of the many rivers and small lakes. Walk out to our breakwater light, or sit on a park bench and watch the drawbridges rise to allow ships into the harbor. Manitowoc, where Great Lakes maritime history was made!
Native Americans called it “Mundeowk, Home of the Good Spirit” because of the beautiful harbors. During WWII, Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. built 28 submarines for the Pacific war. This legacy draws thousands of visitors annually to explore the USS Cobia, the nation’s most completely restored WWII submarine.
Manitowoc’s historic downtown, with charming storefronts, restaurants, and large farmers market, is a natural setting for lakefront festivals and shopping. Relax by taking in a concert or show at the Capitol Civic Centre, a fully restored Vaudeville house. Cruise in on the S.S. Badger Carferry, or sail into Manitowoc Marina with ‘Clean Marina’ certification. Walk the beach, fly a kite, hike a path, bike a trail, explore a museum, view the scenery, or just relax along the coast of Lake Michigan.
