Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands and the only one not included in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Madeline Island is two and a half miles across the channel and about a 25-minute ferry ride from Bayfield. Bikes and vehicles are permitted on the ferry. When the lake freezes over during the winter, visitors and locals use the “Ice Road” to drive back and forth.

Visitors to Madeline Islands arrive at the historic town of La Pointe, which has a year-round population of about 250. La Pointe offers a selection of shops, restaurants, and lodging, as well as a marina, a Wisconsin Historical Society Museum and a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Big Bay State Park and Big Bay Town Park offer camping, swimming beaches, and hiking trails.
